Gisenyi is a city in Rubavu district in the West Province of Rwanda. Gisenyi is coterminous with Goma, the city across the border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The city features a resort on the shores of Lake Kivu, with several hotels and three sandy beaches. The area is also known for water sports. The northern shore of the lake on which Goma and Gisenyi lie is a flat plain featuring lava formations from the eruptions of nearby Mount Nyiragongo.
Gisenyi is also home to BRALIRWA, the only brewery in Rwanda, which manufactures various local beers Primus and Mutzig, as well as Amstel, Guinness and a range of Coca cola brand soft drinks.
Rubavu is a district (akarere) in West Province, Rwanda. Its capital is Gisenyi, Rwanda's biggest beach resort and border city.
Geography
The district lies on the shores of Lake Kivu, around the city of Gisenyi, and just across the border from the Congolese city of Goma. It is also close to Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano.

Rubavu district is divided into 12 sectors (imirenge): Bugeshi, Busasamana, Cyanzarwe, Gisenyi, Kanama, Kanzenze, Mudende, Nyakiliba, Nyamyumba, Nyundo, Rubavu and Rugerero.
Tourist Attractions & Safaris From Gisenyi:.
Being a lake shore resort Gisenyi is ideal for water sports though these have not been developed. However one can enjoy a boat ride to the islands or even across into Goma. Beach volley ball is available at the Kivu Sun serena. Swimming in the lake is allowed.
The Main attractions within Gisenyi are:
*Gishamwana Island with its coffee plantation
,picnic and campsites.
*Volcanoes national park is just 60 km away. One can wake up very early in the morning and make it to track gorillas
*The active volcano of Nyiragongo in the DR Congo which erupted recently burring half of Goma.However from the Volcano you will have superb views of the lake, the towns and the surrounding area.
*The Virunga National Park in DR Congo - ideal for gorilla tracking.
*Lake Kivu with its beach ideal for swimming, boat rides and sun bathing.From Gom You can Visit Ijwi Island.
